そういえばさ、お正月の遊びって色々あるけど、かるたって、ちょっと特別だよね。

🇺🇸Sakura
You know, there are many New Year games, but karuta feels a little different.

🇯🇵すみれ
うん。
にぎやかというより、静かな緊張がある感じ。

🇺🇸Sumire
Yeah.
It’s quiet, but there’s a kind of tension in the air.

そうそう。
声を聞いて、一瞬、息を止めて、札を狙うの。

🇺🇸Sakura
Exactly.
You listen, hold your breath for a moment, and reach for a card.

🇯🇵すみれ
動いてるのは手だけなのに、気持ちはすごく忙しいよね。

🇺🇸Sumire
Only your hand moves, but your heart is racing.

🇯🇵さくら
この光景さ、晴れ着を着て、両サイドに座って、真ん中には読み手。

I imagine us wearing festive kimono, sitting on opposite sides, with a reader in the middle.

……ハチ。

…Hachi.

🇯🇵さくら
そう、八又の猫、ハチ。
得意げな顔で上の句を読むの。

🇺🇸Sakura
Yes, Hachi— the eight-tailed cat.
Reading the first lines proudly.

🇯🇵すみれ
その声だけを頼りに、札に手を伸ばすんだね。

🇺🇸Sumire
And we lean forward, trusting only his voice.

🇯🇵さくら
かるたって、速さとか強さより、「聞くこと」が大事な遊びなんだなって思う。

Karuta isn’t really about speed or strength.
It’s about listening.

誰の声を、どう受け取るか、だね。

About how you receive a voice.

競技カルタで有名になったけど、それでも、やっぱり日本の遊びだなって感じる。

Even though it’s become a competitive sport, it still feels deeply Japanese to me.

🇯🇵すみれ
うん。
勝ち負けはあっても、声と気配を共有する遊びだから。

🇺🇸Sumire
Yeah.
Because it’s about sharing sound and presence.

🇯🇵さくら
羽根つきも、凧揚げも、かるたも。
本当はね、誰かを置いていくためじゃなくて、一緒にお正月を過ごすための遊びだと思うの。

Hanetsuki, kite flying, karuta— they all have winners and losers.
But at their heart, they’re meant to keep everyone together.

うん。
だから、今も心に残るんだと思う。
