When I was a child, I once learned a painful truth: getting too close to stray kittens can sometimes cost them their lives. Since then, I’ve believed that distance is also a form of kindness.
Now, with Hachi — the black-and-white community cat — I keep that balance.
When I start the car, I call out: “Hachi, are you there?”
And if he answers with a soft “meow,” I feel forgiven for disturbing his peace.
It’s not ownership. It’s not dependence.
It’s a bond — fragile, fleeting, but real.

子供の頃、野良の子猫と近づきすぎて、その命を失わせてしまったことがある。
その時に気づいた。距離を保つことも優しさなんだと。
いま、白黒のハチまた猫「ハチ」とは、そのバランスを大切にしている。
車を動かす時には声をかける。「ハチー、いる？」
そして「にゃー」と返事をしてくれたら、彼の居場所を邪魔してしまったことを許してもらえた気がする。
飼うわけでもない。依存するわけでもない。
それでも確かにある、かけがえのない「絆」。
